Tiffin Sandwiches Turns 26!

On 8th June 2000, Tiffin Sandwiches opened the doors to a small sandwich shop on Valley Road in Bradford with a simple goal: to provide fresh, high-quality food that customers could rely on every day.

Twenty-six years later, that small local business has grown into one of the UK's leading food-to-go manufacturers, supplying more than 4,000 customer locations nationwide, delivering over 700,000 fresh products every week, and employing more than 700 people across multiple production sites and distribution hubs.

As we celebrate our 26th anniversary, we're looking back at the milestones, investments, and decisions that have shaped the Tiffin journey from a local sandwich shop to a nationwide food manufacturing and distribution business.

Tiffin Sandwiches began in Bradford as a small independent sandwich shop serving local customers. In those early days, the business was built on hard work, quality products, and strong customer relationships. Those foundations created a culture that continues to influence the business today, despite the significant growth that has taken place over the last two and a half decades.

While the scale of the business has changed dramatically, the commitment to quality, service, and consistency remains exactly the same.

A major turning point came in 2002 when the business moved from Valley Road to Hockney Road Industrial Estate.

The move marked the beginning of Tiffin's transition from a local retail operation into a growing food manufacturing and distribution business. Rather than serving customers solely through a shopfront, we began supplying local shops, garages, workplaces, and convenience stores throughout the region.

As demand continued to increase, a second facility was acquired on Hockney Road to support dedicated packing operations. With separate sites supporting both production and packing activities, Tiffin was able to improve efficiency, increase output, and build the operational foundations needed for future growth.

What started with a small number of local deliveries gradually evolved into a structured distribution network capable of supporting a growing customer base across a much wider geographical area. The investment in additional facilities and operational infrastructure helped position the business for the significant growth that would follow in the years ahead.

Growing Our Manufacturing, Packing and Distribution Capacity Across Bradford

As demand for fresh food-to-go products continued to rise, Tiffin continued investing in its manufacturing, packing, and distribution capabilities.

In 2006, the business expanded further with the acquisition of a larger facility on Allerton Road to support increasing production requirements. The move provided additional space for manufacturing, operational development, and future expansion.

By 2012, Tiffin acquired a new production facility on Thornton Road, significantly increasing manufacturing capacity and strengthening the company's ability to serve customers across a wider geographical area. The following year, an adjacent facility was acquired and developed into a dedicated packing and distribution centre, operating alongside the production site.

With production, packing, and distribution activities operating across multiple facilities, Tiffin had established three key operational sites across Bradford. This infrastructure provided the capacity, efficiency, and flexibility needed to support continued growth and rising customer demand.

These developments represented more than simply acquiring larger buildings. They reflected the evolution of Tiffin from a small local supplier into a structured food manufacturing company with the ambition, expertise, and infrastructure to support long-term growth.

Throughout this period, investment in people, processes, production systems, and logistics helped establish the foundations for the national business we would eventually become.

Consolidating Operations and Raising Standards

By 2014, the business had outgrown its existing sites and was ready for another major step forward.

Tiffin left both the Allerton Road and Thornton Road facilities and relocated operations to a purpose-built site on Commondale Way in Bradford. Bringing manufacturing, packing, and distribution activities together created a more efficient operation, improved workflow across the business, and provided the space needed to support long-term growth.

The move also marked the beginning of a new chapter in Tiffin's commitment to food safety, quality assurance, and operational excellence, with the site achieving BRCGS AA accreditation. As customer expectations, retailer requirements, and production volumes continued to increase, the business invested heavily in systems, processes, infrastructure, and people to ensure it remained at the forefront of the food-to-go industry.

What had once been a small sandwich shop was now operating from a large-scale manufacturing facility capable of serving customers across multiple sectors and regions throughout the UK.

Expanding Beyond Bradford

As the business continued to grow, so did its ambition.

A major milestone came in 2020 with the acquisition of Street Eats. The business was transformed into Tiffin Wales, creating a second BRCGS AA rated manufacturing facility and significantly increasing production capacity outside of Yorkshire.

The same year also saw the launch of Tiffin's first distribution depot in Milton Keynes. The depot provided a strategic base to support customers further south and represented the first step in building a truly nationwide distribution network.

As demand increased across the UK, Tiffin continued investing in regional infrastructure. In 2023, the company acquired a depot in East Kilbride, strengthening its Scottish distribution network and providing improved service levels for customers north of the border.

In 2024, we acquired Tiffin Oasis, an 8-acre woodland site adjacent to our Bradford headquarters. This acquisition forms a key part of our biodiversity net gain strategy, with plans to plant 1,000 native trees, create wildlife corridors, and establish species-rich meadows to enhance habitats, increase biodiversity, and deliver lasting environmental value for the local area.

The same year, the acquisition of a Bristol depot further enhanced coverage across the Southwest and Wales, creating a stronger platform for continued nationwide growth.

These developments were not simply about expanding geographically. They reflected Tiffin's ongoing commitment to bringing fresh food closer to customers, improving service levels, and building the infrastructure required to operate on a national scale.

Strategic Acquisitions and Network Development

The pace of growth accelerated significantly during 2025 as Tiffin continued investing in both manufacturing capacity and long-term strategic development.

One of the most significant milestones came with the acquisition of PJ's Foods in Glasgow. Founded in 1996, PJ's had built a strong reputation as a leading food-to-go manufacturer in Scotland, operating from a purpose built production facility and employing a highly experienced local team.

For us, the acquisition represented far more than geographical expansion. It strengthened our manufacturing presence in Scotland, brought together two businesses that share the same commitment to quality, food safety and customer service, and created opportunities to invest further in people, production capabilities and future growth. The acquisition also supported our long-term strategy of building a stronger national manufacturing network while maintaining the high standards both businesses are known for.

Following the acquisition, the East Kilbride depot was phased out as the business focused on strengthening its manufacturing presence within Scotland through the newly acquired facility.

The same year also saw the acquisition of Love Bites, another respected Bradford-based food-to-go manufacturer. Founded in 1991, Love Bites had spent more than three decades building a respected food-to-go business and a strong reputation across the region.

For us, the acquisition was about much more than increasing capacity. It brought together two Bradford businesses with shared values, added valuable industry expertise to the group, and strengthened our manufacturing footprint in the city where our journey began. Importantly, founder Richard Smith remained involved in the business, helping to support a smooth transition and providing valuable experience as we continue building on the strong foundations he created.

At the same time, the distribution network continued evolving. The original Milton Keynes depot was replaced by strategically located operations in Newport Pagnell and Watford, improving delivery efficiency, reducing journey times, and strengthening service coverage across key regions.

Each of these investments reflected the same long-term philosophy that has guided the business since 2000: investing in people, facilities, infrastructure, and partnerships to create sustainable growth for the future.

Investing in the Future of Food Manufacturing

While continuing to expand its manufacturing and distribution network, Tiffin also began investing in the next chapter of its journey.

In 2025, groundworks commenced on a new state-of-the-art headquarters and manufacturing facility in Bradford. The development represents one of the largest investments in the company's history and demonstrates Tiffin's confidence in the future of the business.

The new facility is designed to provide additional manufacturing capacity, advanced production technology, enhanced sustainability features, and the infrastructure required to support future growth for decades to come.

More than twenty-six years after opening a small sandwich shop on Valley Road, Tiffin continues to invest in innovation, people, and facilities while remaining committed to the values that have shaped the business since day one.
