The Future of Food Manufacturing: Why Investing in People Matters

Producing fresh food at scale takes far more than efficient production lines. It relies on experienced people making informed decisions across every part of the business.
At Tiffin Sandwiches, all of our internal departments and teams across the UK work closely together. Their combined knowledge enables us to manufacture and supply high-quality fresh food-to-go products to customers across England, Scotland and Wales.
Technology, systems and manufacturing capabilities will continue to evolve, but it is the experience behind them that turns capability into a dependable service. For our customers, that means having a food-to-go manufacturing partner with the people and expertise to understand their requirements, maintain exacting standards and respond when circumstances change.
Experience Built Across the Business
Some of the most valuable operational knowledge comes from understanding how different parts of a food manufacturing business connect.
Our Head of Operations, Hazel Jones, joined Tiffin 20 years ago as a Production Operative. Since then, she has progressed through Line Leader, Quality Assurance and Technical Management roles before moving into Operations.
Hazel was also part of the team that prepared for our first BRCGS audit. It was an important milestone for Tiffin and one that required months of preparation and cooperation across the business.
“I feel that I have grown with the business, and I am proud to have been part of its journey. My progression reflects both my commitment to personal development and the company’s commitment to investing in its people.”
Knowledge like Hazel’s cannot be developed overnight. It has grown alongside the business and continues to inform how we approach production, improvement and customer service today.
Maintaining Food Safety and Quality at Scale
Food safety and quality are responsibilities shared across our entire operation.
At our Glasgow site, Site Technical Manager Olajumoke Louis Omifare oversees food safety, quality and compliance. Her work ranges from monitoring standards on the factory floor to reviewing documentation, supporting investigations and helping teams identify the right course of action when a challenge arises.
“Food safety and quality cannot be achieved by one department alone. Success comes from everyone working together, from Production and Hygiene to Quality Assurance, Transport, Administration and the wider management team.”
This collaborative approach is particularly important when manufacturing and distributing fresh food across the UK. A technical investigation may begin within one department, but resolving it efficiently can require input from colleagues in different departments across the business. This means we can bring together the appropriate expertise quickly, protecting standards while keeping customers informed and supported.
Combining Practical Knowledge with Digital Systems
Digital systems have become an established part of how we record, access and review production information. They help our teams manage traceability and examine quality information efficiently.
Their effectiveness, however, still depends on the people using them.
Quality Assurance Technician Grace began her career with Tiffin in Production before moving into our Technical team. Her experience on the production lines gives her useful context when reviewing digital records, completing physical checks and supporting colleagues.
“Having experience on the production lines has also been beneficial because it helps me understand the challenges colleagues face and enables me to support them more effectively.”
It is this combination of reliable information and practical manufacturing knowledge that helps us identify issues, understand what is happening on the factory floor and make well-informed decisions.
Turning Customer Requirements into Practical Solutions
Strong customer partnerships depend on listening carefully and understanding what a customer is trying to achieve.
Our Head of Sales, Laura Finn, brought more than a decade of food-to-go experience to Tiffin. Her commercial knowledge and understanding of the sector help us strengthen existing customer relationships, build new partnerships and identify opportunities that work for both our customers and our manufacturing operation.
“If you genuinely listen to your customers and understand what matters to them, they’ll tell you how your business can improve.”
Laura and our wider commercial sales team work closely with Operations, Production, Technical, Finance and New Product Development in a collaborative approach that allows us to consider commercial objectives alongside quality, production and delivery. It gives customers access to the knowledge of a much wider team through one point of contact.
Building Relationships Beyond the Order
Since Tiffin Sandwiches began, we have always worked to build business relationships in which our customers see us as an extension of their own team, rather than simply another supplier.
Our Regional Account Managers work with customers on sales performance, product development, commercial opportunities and long-term account plans. Behind them is a network of colleagues across Planning, Operations, Technical, NPD, Finance and Customer Service.
For Regional Account Manager Laurette, the personal side of those partnerships matters.
“It’s particularly rewarding when a customer values you as a person rather than simply a supplier.”
Developing that level of trust gives us a clearer understanding of each customer’s priorities. It also creates an open route for feedback, allowing insight to move from customer conversations to the teams responsible for products, production, planning and service.
Selecting a food-to-go manufacturer is about more than finding the right range of products.
Manufacturing capacity matters, but so does food safety standards, technical knowledge, commercial understanding and responsive account management. Just as importantly, customers need confidence that these different functions can work together when requirements change, or a new opportunity arises.
We combine large-scale fresh food manufacturing and nationwide distribution with the knowledge of people who understand our products, processes and customers.
As the food-to-go market continues to evolve, we will keep investing in our capabilities and developing the people behind them. We understand that equipment and systems may make growth possible, but it is the judgment, care and cooperation of experienced teams that turn that investment into consistently high standards and dependable customer service.
